Description

This one-of-one original painting was created by Mohawk artist Robin Tekaiakenhtha Marquis of Kahnawà:ke Mohawk Territory in celebration of the Montréal Victoire women’s hockey team.

Robin Marquis is a member of the Bear Clan and a multidisciplinary artist whose work spans fashion design, beadwork, moccasin making, and painting. A mother of three, her creative practice is deeply connected to Haudenosaunee culture, family, and the natural world. Her work reflects teachings of gratitude, respect for the land, and the interconnectedness of all living beings.

The composition centers on a female hockey player surrounded by elements of nature and Haudenosaunee-inspired symbolism. A bear and a wolf appear alongside the player, representing strength, teamwork, inspiration, and support. These themes hold meaning within Haudenosaunee teachings while also reflecting the spirit of hockey and the collective energy that drives the game.

The artwork brings these elements together using colors inspired by the Montréal Victoire jersey, creating a visual connection between sport, cultural storytelling, and community pride. Through its imagery, the painting reflects the balance between athletic strength and the natural world, highlighting the role of women in sport and culture.

Proceeds from the auction of this piece will support the development of a new Arts and Cultural Building in Kahnawà:ke, which will serve as a dedicated space for cultural programming, artistic expression, and community gathering.
